Crisis in Eduction
October 24 | Posted by mrossol | American Thought, EducationThis is as simple as it gets. If these data make you want to keep on the same path we are on, then I’m sorry for you. It’s the same as health: the US spends more on health per capita and gets some of the poorest results. We spend bazillions on “Education” and the results keep getting worse. There needs to be serious change in the approach, and that doesn’t mean ‘more money’. mrossol
From Columbus Dispatch, Sept. 9, 2025, by Cole Behrens. (‘Sobering’ nation’s report card shows lowest U.S. student scores in decades).
High schoolers in the United States earned their lowest marks on reading and math since
the tests were first administered in 1992 and 2025, respectively, according to “The Nation’s
Report Card” released on September 9th.
Average scores declined from 2019 to 2024 for the nation’s eighth graders in science and
twelfth graders in mathematics and reading, according to the latest results.
The National Center for Education Statistics acting Commissioner Matthew Soldner
said, “The drop in overall scores coincides with significant declines in achievement among
our lowest-performing students, continuing a downward trend that began even before the
COVID-19 pandemic.”
BOTTOM LINE: The education system in America is in CRISIS.
- Only 35% of twelfth graders performed at or above the NAEP “proficient”
achievement level in 2024 for Reading - Only 22% of twelfth graders performed at or above the NAEP “proficient”
achievement level in 2024 for Math. - Only 31% of eighth graders performed at or above the NAEP “proficient”
achievement level in 2024 for Science.
The test scores plummeted for other grade levels as well. They also report a massive
spike in national chronic absenteeism. Nearly a third (31%) of twelfth graders reported missing
three or more days from school in the previous month in 2024, up from 26% in 2019.
