Brown University Should Be Ashamed

Not sure the ‘educated left’ will ever be able to think clearly.

Those outraged at Brown University (“The Children of Brown,” Review & Outlook, Oct. 31) and elsewhere, over the New York Police Department’s stop, question and frisk practice need to calm down. New York beat cops are at least 50% minority, meaning that one-half of all those minority stop-and-frisks are conducted by minority police officers. Can we agree that a minority stopping another minority is not a racial event? One would hope the children of Brown could figure that out.

The irony of Brown students emulating (at least in spirit) the Brownshirts who destroyed Germany’s nascent democracy by bullying and shutting up opposition voices is lost on the self-righteous student body. “Enhanced sensitivity” to feelings of perceived victims of oppression has triumphed over First Amendment rights on many campuses. Commissioner Ray Kelly probably had as much chance of being listened to (much less heard) in the hallowed halls of academic freedom at Brown as at an Occupy Wall Street encampment.
