Mikie Sherrill announced Tuesday that roughly 6,600 noncitizens were improperly registered to vote in the state between June 2023 and June 2024, and that nearly 400 of them cast ballots in the 2024 presidential election.Sherrill, a Democrat, attributed the registrations to a software error in the state’s motor vehicle system. She said she learned of the error last week and immediately ordered an investigation and directed that the noncitizens be removed from state voter rolls.“Our preliminary analysis shows fewer than 400 individuals who were newly registered for the first time because of the error voted,” Sherrill said in a statement. “They were registered as Democrats, Republicans and Unaffiliated voters and were scattered across the state.”The noncitizens had indicated on a keypad that they were not U.S. citizens when applying for driver’s licenses and identification cards. The system registered them anyway, Sherrill said, “through no fault of their own.”New Jersey’s current Motor Vehicle Commission administrator has begun the process of replacing the software vendor responsible for the registration system. Sherrill pledged to “make sure those responsible are held accountable.”“As a military veteran who swore an oath to defend our Constitution, and as a former federal prosecutor, I believe the integrity of our elections is fundamental to our democracy,” Sherrill said. “I am appalled by the reckless failures that allowed this to happen and the lack of transparency shown by those in charge at the time.”At the time the faulty registrations occurred, Sherrill was serving in Congress. Democrat Phil Murphy was then governor of New Jersey.President Trump announced in a primetime address last week that the Department of Homeland Security had identified at least 278,000 names of noncitizens on state voter rolls nationally. Trump officials said the actual number was expected to be higher due to lack of cooperation from several Democratic-led states, including New Jersey.New Jersey’s disclosure came after the state began cooperating with DHS data requests, according to the administration. Sherrill, while announcing the problem, accused the Trump administration of attempting to “weaponize elections for political gain.”“New Jerseyans should have confidence that every eligible citizen can vote, every lawful vote will be counted, and every reasonable step will be taken to protect the integrity of our elections,” she said.
