As you know, a 700+ DC dinner has become a super spreader event. Fauci, Walensky and NYC Mayor Eric Adams attended. You had to be vaccinated to attend. There are many lessons
1 Vaccine passports don’t work. Checking people’s vaccination status does not separate people who have COVID and can spread it from those who do not. It’s a pointless theater. Especially a few months after your last booster where vaccine effectiveness against symptomatic infection goes very low.
2 Vaccine mandates and passports are unethical. Vaccines protect adults from severe disease and death, but to do not halt transmission. As such, they are an individual health choice, just like taking your blood pressure medicine helps you live longer and better. Taking your blood pressure medicine keeps you out of the hospital, and decreases the risk of stroke. No society, even the most regressive, comes to your house and makes sure you take those blood pressure medicines. You should take your blood pressure medicine, and you should be vaccinated, but they should not be compelled.
The seatbelt analogy is silly. Because we are talking about a medical product and not a safety mechanism for a form of transportation, but more to point seat belt law is rarely enforced, the penalty is mild, some people don’t comply, but we don’t take away their ability to work, or participate in society. We don’t fire them from their job. The real battle of seat belts was won over a long period of time, not in a one-year period, and is due to a change in culture. It was about winning hearts and minds and not mandating.
3 Our leaders are hypocrites. Eric Adams is, as we speak, forcing a law that mandates masking only for 2 through 4-year-olds. This is the dumbest policy I’ve ever heard. Simultaneously, he attends a super spreader event. He joins the ranks of politicians tweeting out unmasked photos surrounded by masked kids.
4 Every single person on earth will get Covid. (Let me repeat that a few times: Every single person on earth will get Covid. Every single person on earth will get Covid. Every single person on earth will get Covid.) There is no way to avoid it. It’s best to meet it after vaccination, but beyond that we don’t know. It might even be better to meet it soon after vaccination. You want to meet it at a time and moment when you have the best chance of recovering uneventfully, And you will leave it with more durable immunity.
5 For every Gridiron dinner that makes the news, there are 1,000 similar events around the country that no one talks about. No one is tracking infections at all these other events.
6 Asymptomatic testing is a fool’s errand. People should test when they feel sick, or when they seek medical care. If anyone thinks that widespread asymptomatic testing can improve outcomes, they should show it in a randomized control trial. They can come up with whatever design they want. But today it is highly speculatory. Clearly has downsides, and will disrupt society.
